Information about NDIS-funding for bicycles and tricycles
TADWA works with NDIS participants, their families and supporters for trial and purchase of bikes and trikes. We operate as the Western Australian arm of a national program called ‘Freedom Wheels’.
Some participants have funds allocated in their current plan for purchase of a bike or trike. Most participants require an assessment by an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist and an assistive technology (AT) application that are submitted to NDIS for their approval.
If you would like to work with TADWA in trialling and purchasing a bike or trike, please complete the Freedom Wheels referral form that can be found here (insert link to FW referral form).
We would like to know if you are ready to purchase now or if you are seeking a quote to go with an AT application. Either way, our Relationship Managers will work with our Recreation and Mobility team to set up a time for you and your therapist to visit TADWA to trial our bikes and trikes. We do request that either an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist attends the appointment as well. Your therapist will work with our bike technicians to determine the type of modifications you require.
The bike assessment takes approximately one hour and we do ask that closed-in shoes be worn to the bike assessment as this is a health and safety requirement.
Bike Assessments are available Monday to Thursday between the hours of 10am and 2pm and on Fridays between 10am – 1pm.
Bike Quotes can be provided for:-
- Plan Reviews
- Assistive Technology Applications
For NDIS Plans where funds have been allocated or approved for the purchase of the bike
Once the bike trial has been completed, TADWA will send a quote for the modified bike to you and your therapist. This quote will be included with your AT application if your therapist is completing one for the purchase of the bike.
If you don’t have a therapist to do the AT application, you may consider using a TADWA Occupational Therapist to complete a bike trial, assessment and an AT Application. This would require 10 hours of OT time. Allocated hours for the assessment are generally found in the Capacity Building budget, but may also appear in the Capital Budget.
Please note that due to COVID-19 there is a global shortage of bikes and trikes. TADWA has a limited supply, and our suppliers have advised us of lengthy delays in new shipments.
